Wnet Takes Over Milwaukee!
By Erin Barbeau, Head of Business Administration, FIS
July 18 was a monumental day for payments and fintech women across the Milwaukee area as the Wnet Milwaukee Chapter was officially launched! Plans for this Chapter Kick-Off Party were in the works for almost four months before this event took place and the local women really showed up for it!
Hosted at the Milwaukee Athletic Club in downtown Milwaukee and sponsored by Fiserv, co-chairs Erin Barbeau, Erika Smith and Kassie Fox-Delaney wanted to give women and men in Milwaukee the opportunity to reconnect in person and learn more about Wnet. Thirty women came out from various companies in the area including FIS, Fiserv, Rectangle Health, Associated Bank, JPMorgan Chase and the MKE Tech Hub Coalition. It was an evening full of lively conversation, LinkedIn connections and pure joy due to being back in person together and rallying around a cause that everyone at the event strongly believes in and supports.

Wnet Board Member Cindy Knowles Retires from FIS 2018 Silver Stevie® Winner for Marketing Executive of the Year Will Continue to Work for Gender Equality in the Workplace |
Interview by Erin Barbeau, Business Process Manager, FIS
After being a part of FIS for more than 34 years, senior leader, female advocate and Wnet Board Member Cynthia (Cindy) Knowles officially retired on July 1. During her impressive career, Cindy held a variety of roles in marketing, strategy and business administration for the office of the president, while always staying true to her north star of advancing the mission of gender equality in the workplace.
Cindy was, and continues to be, a mentor, sponsor and coach to many individuals in the fintech and payments industry. She is a genuine, empathetic leader who gave opportunities to her colleagues, no matter how early or late they were in their careers, and was always ready to lend a helping hand and some great advice.
What are your most important learning insights from your career?
Cindy: Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want and what you deserve—whether it is salary, position, title or having a seat at the table—what is the worst thing that can happen? Don’t be discouraged by the word no—think of it as more information that is needed in order to get to yes! Ask and understand the “why” of what you are doing and understand your purpose.
How has Wnet helped your career progression?
Cindy: I wish that I had known about Wnet 15 years ago! The networking, camaraderie, friendship and inspiration from diverse woman has truly enriched my life for the better. There is no jealousy, competition or politics—purely women lifting up and empowering other women to be their best, however they define it.

PayTechWomenLead Series Part 2 Recap
By Sara Ruffell, Marketing Manager, TSYS Solutions, Global Payments
Shelonda Darling was an inspirational speaker wowing her virtual audience in the recent PayTechWomenLead Series Part 2 session on ‘How to be a Great Individual Speaker.’
The session (recorded and now available on the WNET Thought Leadership Center) was geared to motivate WNET members to break out of their comfort zones, and project their voice confidently while sharing their story and embracing—and being prepared for—those moments when you step into the spotlight to talk.
Engaging WNET members by sharing her personal college graduation speech story—and drawing the audience in—Shelonda artfully introduced the 3 C’s of Professional Speaking (Competence, Character & Charisma) and demonstrated that Charisma without Competence (or preparation) does not make for a great speaker experience! She shared insights on how to increase charisma in speaking engagements by building a personal connection with the audience through credibility, storytelling and authenticity.

Leveraging Your Leadership Superpower
When it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), there is no doubt that leadership will come up in the conversation. Socially conscious leaders not only support DEI but are usually driving it within their sphere of influence. One definition defines leadership as “articulating visions, embodying values and creating the environment within which things can be accomplished.” (Richards & Engle, 1986).
However, if you ask many people their definition of leadership, you can receive many different answers. We think we know what it is or, at the very least, we know what it is not. Leadership requires a transaction with those who are being influenced and all forms of leadership are about transformation. Transformation is about initiating change in an organization.
Whether you are specifically focused on DEI or whether you are leading an organization or team, influencing change in your organization requires transformation. Leadership touches the heart and soul and is often an extension of the leader’s beliefs and yields a responsibility of mutual purpose.
