Company will permanently close its digital printing operations in Kimball in May and consolidate such production at a similar plant in Chattanooga. This will eliminate the last 61 jobs at the 24-year-old facility.

Pulp & Paper
Following successful modernization of the bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp drying line by international technology group Andritz, Portuguese pulp producer Celbi set an outstanding production world record of 2,456 admt/d at its Leirosa mill, Portugal, on March 23, 2019.

This funding from SDTC is in addition to the $10 million grant from Natural Resources Canada previously announced and the anticipated provincial investment and loan of up to $7 million previously announced by Fortress on July 11, 2018 that remains subject to completion of definitive documentation.

Assets comprise 7,600 hectares of productive forest land, 2,000 hectares of farmland and 800 hectares of other land. The standing timber volume amounts to one million cubic metres. Some of the other land assets are also suitable for conversion to forestry.

"Overall, the integration of the (new) mills and our new teammates has gone well with the bulk of the commercial and operational work now behind us. Additionally, we completed systems conversions in the NY and MS operations last fall. As we continue to work toward a full conversion of all systems we are approaching another significant milestone."

In line with the EU movement toward sustainability, ePac offers recyclable film as an option. Digital printing is far more eco-friendly than conventional printing processes since waste and process steps are eliminated and energy consumption is reduced. Additionally, brands have the ability to order to demand so less flexible packaging is kept in inventory and ultimately discarded.

Total investment in the new moulded fiber tray factory amounts to approximately SEK 45 million and mainly consists of a tailor-made system for preparing pulp and four machines for the manufacture of trays. The latest machine was purchased at the end of March and is to be put into operation by the end of 2019.

Parliament backed the ban 560-35. EU member states have given their support but need to vote on the measure for it to go into effect. The ban would be implemented from 2021 and would affect a range of plastic products that have reasonable alternatives, such as plastic cutlery, foam takeout food containers, straws, and drink stirrers.

Nanotechnology
Product has large thixotropic property, while its viscosity is extremely high. It also has a non-sticky and moist feel. In addition, due to its excellent dispersing ability, it is expected to be applied to a wider range of cosmetic products. Another feature is that the raw material, wood fiber, is sustainable and renewable resource derived from forest.

Printing speed is significantly enhanced due to compound tailored thermal and flow properties. Fine cellulose fibres in turn brings self-supporting melt flow, enabling objects with round or other complex shapes to be printed without warpage problems. Another benefit of cellulose biocomposite is its wood like post processing.

Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging helps close the loop by bringing recyclable packaging materials to the market. The new blueloop solutions are mono-material structures made from PP, PE and paper, building on the standard materials that are widely recycled and will have an economically viable use after collection.

"The current takeaway packages used by restaurants either have functional challenges or consumers regard them as non-ecological. We also got feedback that current packaging does not fulfill the criteria of premium packaging," said Leena Yliniemi, Technical Marketing Director at Metsä Board.

Once an area is mapped, Georgia‐Pacific doesn’t buy wood fiber from these areas except in unique situations when active forest management is required to improve the habitat for endangered, rare and/or vulnerable species. These species can include the northern spotted owl, the Louisiana black bear, and eastern indigo snakes.

Success of the venture can be seen in the expansions undertaken during the 20 years. The plant was expanded three times since inception, in 2003, 2008 and in 2017. Throughout the plant’s existence small and medium suppliers have benefited as contractors and sub-contractors. Thousands of temporary jobs were created through the expansion projects.

Greaseproof Papers is managed as a separate business unit in Metsä Tissue, which is part of the Metsä Group. To improve internal efficiency and simplicity, Greaseproof Papers will be separated from Tissue Papers organization. Michael Barth has been appointed VP of Operations, Greaseproof Papers.

Per Bjurbom has been appointed as CEO for European Division of Shanying International. Nordic paper is a subsidiary to Shanying International since October 2017. During his almost five years as CEO of Nordic Paper he has developed and built Nordic Paper to what it is today, a modern and successful company owned by Shanying.
