Port of HaminaKotka Ltd and Steveco Oy have jointly constructed a world-class pulp terminal in the new D-area in the western part of the Mussalo Harbour in Kotka. The Port of HaminaKotka has invested almost 40 million euros in the infrastructure of the expansion area of approx. 30 hectares, and Steveco has built a modern pulp terminal of 20,000 m² for the sea transport of UPM’s Kaukaa and Kymi pulp mills to be focused at Mussalo.

A new report cited those as examples of how the pulp and paper industry that helped build Wisconsin – and became an issue in last year’s elections for governor and the Legislature – has remade itself.

GE announced an order for a multiyear services agreement with Sappi, the global provider of sustainable woodfibre products and solutions. GE will provide long-term maintenance services and performance upgrades on a 42-megawatt gas turbine supplied by another equipment manufacturer, powering Sappi’s industrial process. GE’s solution will allow Sappi to reduce its costs through a maintenance interval extension and performance benefits.

Market Roundup
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the September 2019 Printing-Writing Monthly report on October 16. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased seven percent in September compared to September 2018. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased five percent in September compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels remained essentially flat (-0.5%) when compared to August 2019.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the September 2019 Boxboard Monthly report on October 18. Total Boxboard production in September decreased three percent compared to September 2018. It was down one percent when compared to the same nine months of 2018. The boxboard operating rate was 91.1 percent, down 2.2 points from September 2018 and down 1.3 points year-to-date.

Pulp & Paper
Sonoco-Alocre announced it will raise prices for paper-based tubes and cores supplied in the United Kingdom between 8 and 10 percent, depending on product category, effective for shipments beginning on November 1, 2019.

Valmet will supply a coated board machine for Graphic Packaging International’s (GPI) mill in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the United States. With this investment in the latest coated board technology, GPI is committing to sustainable packaging with exceptional product quality and cost competitiveness for producing coated recycled board (CRB) grades. The start-up of the machine is scheduled for the first half of 2022.

Sappi Europe, in partnership with IGEPA group, announced that beginning January 1st, 2020, the Sappi Magno range will be available across Germany. IGEPA group is Germany’s leading paper merchanting group with the widest product range and an unrivalled reputation for service to its large and loyal customer base.

Honeywell today announced its collaboration with Papertech to develop and market TotalVision™, a connected, camera-based detection system for the flat sheet industries. The system enables customers to identify and resolve defects on the production line, improving quality and efficiency. The fully integrated total quality control solution is designed for flat sheet and film processes in which surface detection and production break monitoring capabilities are critical for competitive success. This new solution is designed for paper, pulp, tissue, board, extruded film, calendaring, lithium-ion battery, copper and aluminium foil producers.

Sustainability
Smurfit Kappa has joined with companies HVC and Bluemats to unveil an ambitious plan for the first full beverage carton recycling plant in the Netherlands. The planned new facility will have the capability to quickly split and sort the components of the drinks cartons so the materials can be used to create new products.

WestRock Company (NYSE: WRK) today announced that Pat Lindner, president, Consumer Packaging, has been named chief innovation officer in addition to his leadership role of the Company’s Consumer Packaging segment. As chief innovation officer, Lindner will lead WestRock’s global innovation capabilities in materials science and manufacturing services, and accelerate the development of new, sustainable products and solutions.

Markus Westerkamp, the current Vice President of the Food Packaging business, part of the Specialties business area, is appointed Executive Vice President of the Advanced Solutions business area and a member of the Group Executive Management Team as of January 1, 2020.

SWM International (NYSE: SWM), announced that it has named Omar Hoek as Executive Vice President, Engineered Papers, effective January 2020. Hoek will join SWM from Finnish fibers manufacturer Ahlstrom-Munksjo, where he leads their Specialties division and is part of their senior executive leadership team. Hoek has also held leadership positions with Avery Dennison and Newell Rubbermaid.
