Rob Baron, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marcal Paper, announced [on Dec. 31] that the company will return to regular papermaking operations in New Jersey sometime in January, less than one year after a 10-alarm fire destroyed its iconic manufacturing facilities and caused the immediate shutdown of the business.

PCB Piezotronics, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: MTSC), announced the completion of new environmentally controlled clean rooms totaling 4,300 sq. ft. at their Walden Avenue headquarters. Earlier this year, the sensor manufacturer began assembly of all pressure and force products in this new state-of-the-art facility.

The global tissue paper market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% during 2019-2024. The thriving hospitality and tourism industries are among the key factors driving the growth of the market. Furthermore, an overall increase in the awareness regarding health and hygiene among consumers has enhanced the utilization of tissue paper products in office complexes and commercial spaces as well.

Pulp & Paper
Resolute Forest Products Inc. (NYSE: RFP) (TSX: RFP) announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Conifex Timber Inc.'s three sawmills in the U.S. South for $163 million plus working capital delivered at closing, which is currently estimated at $7 million. The three sawmills, with combined production capacity of 550 million board feet, are located in Cross City (Florida), and Glenwood and El Dorado (Arkansas).

J.D. Irving, Limited predicts it will hire 6,800 full-time employees as well as over 2,700 students across the company’s operations in Canada and the U.S. over the next three years.

Valmet and Fabio Perini have established an Industrial Internet ecosystem partnership to strengthen collaboration in the tissue industry. The target is to allow tissue producers and converters to work together more efficiently, and to exchange knowledge and resources for the benefit of their customers.

Kaplamin Ambalaj, a Çukurova Paper and Packaging Group company providing packaging solutions to some of the biggest businesses and brands in Turkey, has added a second Onset X platform at its Prigo Digital Solution Center, which opened in December 2017.

New Products
A fibre-based ice cream package designed by Stora Enso for the Finnish artisan ice cream manufacturer Vanhan Porvoon Jäätelötehdas has been awarded in the international WorldStar competition. The renewable and recyclable packaging was designed by product designer Outi Honkavaara at Stora Enso’s DesignStudio in Lahti, Finland.

The European paper industry welcomes the EU Green Deal Communication and the set of proposed actions planned for March 2020, in particular the European Climate Law, the New Industrial Strategy, the Circular Economy Action Plan 2.0 coupled with the Sustainable Products initiative and a new Forest strategy.

Giuseppe Campanelli has been appointed President, Minerals Services business area and a member of Metso’s Executive Team from January 2, 2020 onwards. Previously he has been a member of the Minerals Services business area management team heading Professional Services.

Business Wire reports that Pixelle Specialty Solutions (“Pixelle”) has promoted Timothy R. Hess to Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Mr. Hess will continue to report to Steven J. Klinger, Executive Chairman of Pixelle. Mr. Hess has served as President of Pixelle since 2018, when the company was created through private investment firm Lindsay Goldberg's acquisition of Glatfelter’s Specialty Papers Business Unit.

TAPPI News
 We honor Richard Marshall Ludwig who was a member of TAPPI since 1954 and TAPPI Fellow since 1990. He passed away on December 19, 2019. We extend our sympathy and condolences to his families, colleagues and friends.
Richard had a proclivity for leadership throughout his career. He was Vice President of Engineering and Logistics at International Paper Co., long-time executive with Hammermill Paper Co., and former chairman of the Membership and Gifts & Bequests Committees of the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation.
Ludwig’s leadership expertise also earned him accolades from TAPPI. He was elected a TAPPI Fellow and is a recipient of the Leadership and Service Award.
Richard Marshall Ludwig will be missed but remembered for his legacy.
