Rayonier Advanced Materials (RYAM) announced that its facility at Jesup, Georgia, has been impacted by a force majeure declared by its natural gas provider, Southern Natural Gas Company, L.L.C., due to an unscheduled outage of the Elba Express Pipeline's Hartwell Compressor Station (the "SNG Force Majeure Event", or "Event").

SCA has acquired its first wind farm with the purchase of 36 wind turbines in Markbygden in Piteå municipality, northern Sweden. The acquisition is in line with the company's previously stated goal of becoming one of the Sweden's leading providers of fossil-free electricity generated by wind power.

Valmet announced that it will upgrade the coating section of Board Machine 5 at Stora Enso Imatra Mills, Tainionkoski in Finland. In addition to electric heated OptiDry Coat air dryers, the upgrade includes a drying capacity increase in the coating section, a new wire loop to the existing dryer group and automation.

New Jersey-based tissue producer Marcal Paper today announced that it has acquired von Drehle Corporation, a premier provider of quality towel and tissue products for the away-from-home market. Von Drehle Corporation will operate as a division of Marcal Paper. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Weak demand and sometimes overflowing warehouses are causing price declines on the British market for brown corrugated case material. In particular for recycled brown CCM grades, the pace of the price erosion is said to be “unheard of.”

As 2022 comes to an end, Georgia-Pacific has launched or completed approximately $1.8 billion in capital improvement projects throughout the company. Projects include new facilities and additions as well as improvements to existing operations.

Pulp & Paper
UPM is finalizing the construction works of the greenfield eucalyptus pulp mill in Uruguay and enters the final phases of the project. The start-up of the 2.1 million metric ton/year mill near Paso de los Toros is expected by the end of the first quarter of 2023.

Canfor Pulp Products Inc. (TSX:CFX) is announcing the immediate curtailment of its Intercontinental Pulp Mill, which is expected to be in place for four weeks.

ProJet received an order for Power Cleaners (dryer fabric cleaners) from PT Suparma, Surabaya for their Paper Machine # 10. The new Cleaners will be installed in the Dryer Section. The value of the order will not be disclosed. ProJet was chosen over competitors because of superior quality, cleaning efficiency, service, availability of spare parts and price efficiency.

Marcal Paper, a leading manufacturer of recycled and eco-friendly bath, towel, and tissue products, announced that it has acquired von Drehle Corporation, a premier provider of quality towel and tissue products for the away-from-home market. Amcor (NYSE: AMCR; ASX: AMC) announced it completed the sale of its three factories in Russia to HS Investments, a Russian-based investor, after receiving all necessary regulatory approvals and cash proceeds, including receipt of closing cash balances. The cash and debt free consideration value is €370 million.

Clients in Southeast Asia (SEA) have pushed hard for cuts in prices for old corrugated container (OCC) imports over the past two weeks. Buyers in the region projected that there would be sellers under stock pressure willing to lower prices for the grade in the run-up to the Christmas and New Year holiday.

New Products
Tim Hortons restaurants across Canada will be introducing wooden and fibre cutlery for guests, eliminating an estimated use of 90 million single-use plastics a year, starting in early 2023. The wooden cutlery and fibre spoon are both compostable. In another move to reduce the use of single-use plastics, plastic lids on Loaded Bowls are also being replaced with fibre lids.

Georgia-Pacific’s wood products have been used in millions of homes, but never one quite like this. It’s being called the world’s first 100% biobased home printed on the world’s largest 3D printer, and Georgia-Pacific is proud to have played a part in the project.

Richard "Dick" Robert Lopes, age 93, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 17, 1929, in New Bedford, MA, the son of Antone Sears and Carolina Marie (Silva) Lopes.
