SPFA News and Announcements
On February 13, 2020, SPFA will host the Industry Excellence Awards Luncheon as part of The Sprayfoam Show 2020 Convention & Expo in Pasadena, California. There will be awards in several categories for projects that demonstrate excellence in our industry. A panel of industry experts will adjudicate the selection process through a blind judging process. Judges will not know to whom each of the entries belong, therefore the judging will be solely based on the merit of the project according to awards guidelines.

To be eligible for an award, projects must follow the following criteria:
Nominations can be made by any SPFA member.
Contractor nominees must be SPFA members to be entered into the contest.
The project must have been completed between December 1, 2018 and November 30, 2019.
ALL NOMINATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY December 6, 2019 midnight PST

SPF Tech

It has been an active summer for members of SPFA’s Building Envelope Committee and Roofing Committee.

As a result of the efforts of several volunteers, we are pleased to announce the publication of two new TechTips and a new TechDoc from the Building Envelope Committee.  The new TechTips provide installation guidance in a short format on improving adhesion of SPF to engineered wood products, as well as guidance on the installation of SPF over wires and piping to reduce exothermic heat damage.  The new TechDoc SPFA-153,  “Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation for Below Slab Applications” provides guidance for installation of closed-cell SPF below concrete slabs.    Sub-slab insulation, installed before the concrete is poured,  is an important application as building codes  are increasing the requirements for insulation below sub-grade concrete slabs – especially in colder climates.

The Roofing Committee has been busy as well.  In the 1990’s, SPFA developed the first SPF Roofing Brochure, AY-130.  This document was last published in 1997.  Recognizing the document needed to be updated, it was not included during the 2015 re-formatting of all of our TechDocs and briefly discontinued.  After significant work with several Roofing Committee volunteers (Bruce Schenke, Jason Hoerter and Luke Nolan), and with support from our marketing consultant and graphic designer, we are pleased to publish the significantly updated SPFA-130 Roofing Brochure.

All of these TechTips and TechDocs are available for free download from the SPFA website here:

Should you have any questions or comments about these new documents, or if you would like to participate in the document development and update process, contact any of our technical committee chairs or the SPFA Technical Director, Rick Duncan, rickduncan@sprayfoam.org.

SPFA Courses and Certification

During 2020, the SPFA PCP is continuing the Roadshow making it easier for contractors everywhere to become certified!

For those who are attending the SPFA Convention and Exhibits in Pasadena, CA – here are a few suggestions to help you make the most of your trip!

Prior to coming to Pasadena, take the time to learn the important items in the first level of certification (SPF Assistant). You can either take the SPF Assistant Exam Prep course online or you may self-study, using PCP’s Study Guide.  That will free up your schedule to take the SPF Installer Course (Wed. Feb 12) and the SPF Master Installer Course (Tues, Feb. 11)  During the time you are in Pasadena, you can take the written exams, leaving only the Field Exam for the Master Installer level and we are bringing the Field Exams to you with our Roadshow in 2020. (Calendar of events will be posted in a few weeks.)

If you are already PCP Certified, this may be the time for you to move to the next level of certification.  If so, you can prepare by taking the Exam Prep Course(s) or for the more experienced, you can self-study using our Study Guides!

If you aren’t sure the current status of your credentials within the PCP, simply contact Kelly Marcavage at kmarcavage@sprayfoam.org. She is also available to answer all of your questions and can help plan your strategy to achieve any level of certification whether it is in your office, at a Roadshow Event or during the Sprayfoam 2020 convention.  There are many ways to accomplish your certification goals!

Beware of pirates and poachers!
SPFA contracts for blocks of hotel rooms at discounted rates for the benefit of our attendees. Pirates and poachers not only jeopardize the show’s ability to meet its obligations, but also place attendees in danger of increased fees, credit card theft and phony reservations, resulting in no hotel room at all!

PIRATE: A fictitious business, often with a name like “Convention Housing Services.” A pirate will contact faculty, exhibitors or potential attendees. The pirate claims to be working with the show and will pressure you to reserve and pay for a hotel room immediately due to low inventory. They charge your credit card and also collect the information for future use but no hotel rooms are reserved.
POACHER: Hotel poachers, also known as third-party room-block marketing firms, often present themselves as either the official housing agency for a conference or authorized by it to book hotel reservations. A poacher offers hotel rooms outside of the show’s contracted block.

REMEMBER: SPFA WILL NOT TELEPHONE INDIVIDUALS REGARDING THE PURCHASE OF HOTEL RESERVATIONS.
PIRATES and POACHERS often misrepresent themselves by illegally using our logo.
