On February 13, 2020, SPFA will host the Industry Excellence Awards Luncheon as part of The Sprayfoam Show 2020 Convention & Expo in Pasadena, California. There will be awards in several categories for projects that demonstrate excellence in our industry. A panel of industry experts will adjudicate the selection process through a blind judging process. Judges will not know to whom each of the entries belong, therefore the judging will be solely based on the merit of the project according to awards guidelines.
To be eligible for an award, projects must follow the following criteria:
Nominations can be made by any SPFA member. Contractor nominees must be SPFA members to be entered into the contest. The project must have been completed between December 1, 2018 and November 30, 2019. ALL NOMINATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY December 6, 2019 midnight PST

Wildfire is an increasingly serious issue in California, with fires growing bigger and becoming more frequent and destructive. Fifteen of the 20 largest fires in the state's history have occurred since 2000 and tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed.

Icynene-Lapolla, global supplier and manufacturer of high performance, energy efficient building envelope solutions, launched a new low-pressure, low density, two-component spray polyurethane foam. The new spray foam product is available in two sizes and named OC-450 and OC-1350, with each referring to the maximum amount of board feet the material will cover (450 and 1,350 respectively). Each option provides a compact and convenient size for contractors looking to complete touch ups on the job.

It has been an active summer for members of SPFA’s Building Envelope Committee and Roofing Committee.
As a result of the efforts of several volunteers, we are pleased to announce the publication of two new TechTips and a new TechDoc from the Building Envelope Committee. The new TechTips provide installation guidance in a short format on improving adhesion of SPF to engineered wood products, as well as guidance on the installation of SPF over wires and piping to reduce exothermic heat damage. The new TechDoc SPFA-153, “Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation for Below Slab Applications” provides guidance for installation of closed-cell SPF below concrete slabs. Sub-slab insulation, installed before the concrete is poured, is an important application as building codes are increasing the requirements for insulation below sub-grade concrete slabs – especially in colder climates.
The Roofing Committee has been busy as well. In the 1990’s, SPFA developed the first SPF Roofing Brochure, AY-130. This document was last published in 1997. Recognizing the document needed to be updated, it was not included during the 2015 re-formatting of all of our TechDocs and briefly discontinued. After significant work with several Roofing Committee volunteers (Bruce Schenke, Jason Hoerter and Luke Nolan), and with support from our marketing consultant and graphic designer, we are pleased to publish the significantly updated SPFA-130 Roofing Brochure.
All of these TechTips and TechDocs are available for free download from the SPFA website here:

Beware of pirates and poachers! SPFA contracts for blocks of hotel rooms at discounted rates for the benefit of our attendees. Pirates and poachers not only jeopardize the show’s ability to meet its obligations, but also place attendees in danger of increased fees, credit card theft and phony reservations, resulting in no hotel room at all! PIRATE: A fictitious business, often with a name like “Convention Housing Services.” A pirate will contact faculty, exhibitors or potential attendees. The pirate claims to be working with the show and will pressure you to reserve and pay for a hotel room immediately due to low inventory. They charge your credit card and also collect the information for future use but no hotel rooms are reserved. POACHER: Hotel poachers, also known as third-party room-block marketing firms, often present themselves as either the official housing agency for a conference or authorized by it to book hotel reservations. A poacher offers hotel rooms outside of the show’s contracted block. REMEMBER: SPFA WILL NOT TELEPHONE INDIVIDUALS REGARDING THE PURCHASE OF HOTEL RESERVATIONS. PIRATES and POACHERS often misrepresent themselves by illegally using our logo.
