February 1 – 4, 2021
San Antonio, TX

More details to be announced soon!

We are looking for a few good men and women! The SPFA Board of Directors term is two years, which runs from July 1 to June 30. Beginning in May 2020 SPFA will be circulating nomination forms to membership for individuals to nominate or be nominated to have their name included in the 2020-2022 SPFA Board election process. The month of May allows for nominations of members interested in serving, and the month of June allows for actual voting in the election. The election closes at the end of June, and the new Board members will be announced on July 1, 2020. Current Board members are allowed to be renominated and run for another term, any members interested in serving on the Board of Directors for the first time are encouraged to submit a nomination. The SPFA Board of Directors consists of 15 individuals representing all facets of the professional SPF industry, with 6 Contractor Members, 6 Non-Contractor Members (manufacturers, distributors, consultants, etc), and the 3 members of the Executive Committee consisting of President (reserved for a contractor seat), Vice President (reserved for a contractor seat), and Treasurer (may be from any membership category), with an ex officio non-voting member of Immediate Past President. The SPFA Board is just like the entire SPFA family, a mix of people looking to use their experiences and talents to do good for the industry, to have the conversations that position SPF and SPFA to deliver the value and benefits and services its members and the industry stakeholders demand. If you have an interest in being part of those discussions, and working with your peers across contracting, manufacturing, distributing and professional consulting parts of this great industry, watch your inbox and SPFA’s website, along with this newsletter for nominating instructions to be release shortly.

Industry News and Announcements
The Mayo Clinic has developed an online tool to help you assess your symptoms and determine whether you’re a candidate for a COVID-19 test. It also offers guidance regarding when to seek medical care and what to do in the meantime.

GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, reports that amid the COVID-19 crisis, global construction output is expected to contract by 1.4% in 2020, according to forconstructionpros.com.

Construction remains essential in many states, meaning work on jobsites can continue. But CDC guidelines and local governments emphasize the importance of maintaining proper health procedures such as regularly washing hands and maintaining a safe social distance even while working.

If like many of us, you have been bouncing around from one source of information to the next, SPFA has attempted to curate for you an assembly of the best related information that should assist your sprayfoam business during these challenging times. As users of MDI or TDI, I would like to inform you as part of the polyurethane value chain, about a new resource CPI is releasing today, the newly updated Safe Handling of MDI and TDI video series. Developed by the industry, for the industry, the CPI Transportation Work Group has spent the past year and a half working to update and produce these updated programs. These videos are an important resource for our industry and are used across the country to train over 1,000 workers each year. The six part series are designed to inform both employers and employees of the best practices for the transportation of MDI and TDI including hazard communication, personal protective equipment, drum and intermediate bulk container handling, hook-up and transfer operations, and emergency response procedures. The videos are located on the CPI Website and can be found here. We hope you will join us in promoting this new resource and forwarding the press release and the link to the videos to your membership and others within the polyurethanes industry.

Health & Safety
The debate over facemasks in every company and every home basically comes down to - do we need these, or can we sacrifice some? When your job and livelihood depend upon you having proper respiratory protection, as a professional sprayfoam contractor's does, maintaining a supply of respiratory protection devices is critical. Many of you are still able to work, and that means going to work with your PPE. Do not work without PPE. Any interior work with SPF should be done with fresh-air (SAR) anyway - if you are not currently using a fresh-air system now is the time to start and cut your cord of dependence on cartridge replacement schedules. Frontline medical workers being exposed to COVID-19 also need protection. When the caregivers get sick, there's no care left to give. If you can spare some facemasks or respirators, please find a donation location near you and offer whatever assistance you can.

The construction industry has well established safety protocols that will keep workers safe. Worker safety and jobsite best practice is a priority focus throughout the industry. The trade associations representing the construction trades have extensive training and education programs available that are frequently the product of coordination with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”). Individual builders and companies make worker safety their first focus.

SPFA has partnered with many related trade associations, such as the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) and National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), to turn up the volume on our collective voices calling for construction to remain operating as an essential business. Some states have been much more restrictive than others. ConstructionDive hosts a map of various operating conditions of each state. NAHB also has a map that works well. Linked below are recent NAHB and NRCA letters and positions that SPFA is supporting. SPFA advocates residential and commercial construction, insulation and roofing, as essential services that can continue during the COVID-19 outbreak on the basis of: Adjacent trades are often operating at a distance naturally on a job site, SPF contractors in particular utilize PPE on the job site adding a higher level of protection, and professional contractors are oriented toward adhering to important safety protocols. For all of these reasons and more that SPFA will be expanding upon in our own industry letter, SPF contractors should be deemed essential elements of continuing construction business, and lessening the industry's negative impact as another victim of the economic impacts of COVID-19.
